Persona vs Dock launchers and Userdata Switcher

Three common ways to run more than one Cursor account: hand-rolled Dock or CLI launchers with --user-data-dir, marketplace tools such as Userdata Switcher, and Persona. All rest on the same isolation boundary. They differ in how you open windows, attach projects, and handle cursor:// sign-in links.

Quick comparison

All three isolate accounts the same way. Persona is the stronger default: switching stays inside Cursor, projects can route to the right account, and Dock / cursor:// handling is built in instead of something you maintain yourself.

Capability Dock / CLI launchers Userdata Switcher Persona Recommended
Isolated accounts Yes, via --user-data-dir Yes, userdata profiles Yes, same isolation, managed for you
Switch UI Leave Cursor for apps / aliases Separate extension / tool UI Status bar inside Cursor, no context switch
Project → account rules No No Built-in .cursor/persona.json and folder rules
Dock + cursor:// helper No No Cursor - Work launchers + Persona Helper included
Per-project cost cues No No Dashboard and insights available

Manual Dock / CLI launchers

Best when you want zero extensions and you are comfortable maintaining shell aliases or small macOS apps that pass --user-data-dir. You own updates when Cursor’s app path changes. See the user-data-dir guide.

Userdata Switcher and similar tools

Marketplace or GitHub tools that create and open userdata profiles solve the same isolation problem. Prefer them if you already use that workflow and only need profile switching. Compare release activity, Cursor compatibility, and whether project routing matters for your team.

When Persona fits

Choose Persona when you want switching inside Cursor, project-aware reopen rules, Dock launchers with Helper for cursor:// links, and optional per-window or Pro per-project cost views. Profiles still are not separate accounts. Read why.

Steps

  1. Decide whether you need project→account routing or only manual profile opens.
  2. For a minimal setup, follow --user-data-dir launchers.
  3. If you already use a userdata switcher tool and it meets your needs, keep it.
  4. If you want status-bar switching, repo rules, and Helper launchers, install Persona from Open VSX.

Common mistake

Assuming Cursor Profiles replace separate accounts. They do not. See Profiles vs accounts.

Switch with Persona

Persona is a Cursor account switcher on Open VSX. It opens each account in an isolated userdata window, with project rules and Cursor - Work Dock launchers when you need them.
