Cursor Profiles vs separate Cursor accounts

Cursor Profiles do not give you a separate account. Profiles can split themes, keybindings, and some settings, but they still share one sign-in and one subscription. Separate accounts require separate userdata directories via --user-data-dir. Persona opens those isolated windows so work, personal, and client logins stay apart.

Steps

  1. If you only need different themes or settings, use Cursor Profiles in one account.
  2. If you need two subscriptions or two sign-ins, plan one userdata directory per account.
  3. Launch each account with --user-data-dir or install Persona and create personas in the setup wizard.
  4. Confirm each window shows the expected account email before trusting chat history or billing.

Common mistake

Creating a Profile named “Work” does not isolate the Cursor subscription. Billing, Team seats, and chat stay on the signed-in account for that userdata.

Switch with Persona

Persona is a Cursor account switcher on Open VSX. It opens each account in an isolated userdata window, with project rules and Cursor - Work Dock launchers when you need them.
